Conspiracy to finish Urdu from Maulana Azad National Urdu University

The identity of Maulana Azad National Urdu University is in danger. Due to its national character, the domination of north Indians was being felt hitherto but with the appointment of non-Urdu knowing teachers, it is losing its Urdu character. Urdu University was founded on the basis of promoting Urdu language and imparting higher education through the medium of Urdu to link it with job oriented courses. The way in which Urdu University is functioning gives and impression that Urdu is being eradicated in a phased manner systematically.
Maulana Azad Urdu University issued employment notification last week which indicates that it is making an attempt to end Urdu. The notification issued by the university on 28th October inviting applications for 41 posts of Associate Professors and Asst. Professors. When Urdu speakers read this notification, they were wonderstruck since Urdu language was not made compulsory in the notification. It may be pointed out that in the earlier notifications Urdu was “Compulsory” but in recent advertisement it has been written as “knowledge of Urdu is essential”. In the earlier advertisements, it used to be mentioned clearly that the candidates for any teaching posts should have studied Urdu as one of the subjects at SSC, Intermediate or Degree level. In the notification number 25/2011 issued on 27th January 2011 it is clearly mentioned that for teaching staff study of Urdu as a subject at SSC, Intermediate or Graduation is compulsory. In the notification which is now published, the clause of knowledge of Urdu has been diluted. It clearly indicates that the University administration is inclined to appoint candidates on the considerations of nepotism, recommendations and by relaxing the rules of knowing Urdu to accommodate non-Urdu knowing teachers in the University.
Many complaints were received in the past about nepotism in appointments and many other irregularities. Urdu University has been established to promote Urdu language and literature but with its activities one feels that it is providing opportunities for the entry of non-Urdu teaching staff.
Right from its inception, the Urdu University was not liked by the non-Urdu speakers and the so-called progressive people. They were opposing to limit the University to Urdu only. They had started giving suggestions to start various other courses. It may be noted that this University has been established to impart education in Urdu but at the entrance, every day a Hindi word is entered with a view to promoting Hindi language. Many people objected to it but the management substantiated it saying that Hindi is national language and there is no harm in teaching Hindi. All those persons who had struggled for the formation of Urdu University must be aggrieved by hearing that the management of the University is making an organized effort to appoint non-Urdu teachers. The university sources maintained that for the reserved posts, it is not possible to get Urdu knowing persons. This argument of the management is inappropriate. The University administration should know that in case competent and qualified Urdu knowing persons are not available for appointment to the reserved posts, these posts could be de-reserved with the permission of Dept. of Personnel, Govt. of India.
It seems that the management of Urdu University is mentally prepared to induct non- Urdu knowing teachers. It may be noted that in the reserved seats Unani medical courses in which the medium of instruction is Urdu, Non-Urdu students were given seats which spoiled the standard of teaching in Unani medical college. In the same way, the process of ruining Urdu University seems to have been started. If the Urdu knowing people do not raise to the occasion for the protection of Urdu in Maulana Azad National Urdu University, very soon, this University will be in the hands non-Urdu knowing people. It will meet the same fate as Osmania University in the past.
